    Open Source

Okay, I'm proposing that EA be open-sourced to eveyone in the same way other other games such as Doom and Quake have been done. I won't waste my time on this effort if there's just going to be a bunch of people who oppose it because it conflicts with their personal interests. I'll work on it, but get it out of the hands of the greedy twerps who think it will make them money and make it a community project where it belongs.

LOL, because I advocated making EA open source and made a huge article about how it should be done and some dick with mod status came along and edited it, so I just closed it.

Are you now supporting that idea? Because I will sure get behind the effort. You know I will put my money where my mouth is. Lets do it. I just don't want to see a bunch of dumb****s involved who never do anything but talk ****.

EDIT: thanks for fixing this thread, Snow. I really think this should be discussed even if it goes nowhere. we have lots of good and talented folks out there who can see a project such as this through. but it's a bit like herding cats, we need alot of CONTROL to keep it all going in the right direction.

i hope this goes somewhere and i'm willing to wait and work on it as long as it takes. EA has pretty much been gone for five years, another five years won't make that much difference to those of us who really love the game.

The first thing that needs to be done is establish a legal trust for the game. We can't have one guy calling the shots and holding the game hostage the way things are now. If Brandon Brophy (who owns the copyright) won't work with us then we can work around him by changing the name and rebuilding the game from the ground up. But it has to be a community effort.

The first thing to do is establish a Board of Governors of at least nine of us who are willing to take responspility for all decisions concerning the game, and we register our incorporated status in some state like New York where we have a central jurisdiction so we can sue anyone who jacks with us. Then we file By-Laws as a registered corporation setting out exactly how it all works, and it takes at least five board member to make certain decisions like writing the checks to pay for hosting fees and other things that are just too controversial for one person.

This has been done with other games, it's possible for us to do it with EA, we just need to work together.

Okay I started a little message board to get this idea off the ground - Endless Ages Open Source Project - Index

Everyone is welcome to discuss the issues, make suggestions, give constructive criticizm, or help out if you want.

I just don't see how running an outdated engine will be much help...
If you really want to see this game go on and compete with modern day mmo's it needs to be gutted and redone.

As for running it like it was done before I believe it should be open source since it is fairly outdated now.

Well, the whole "open source" thing was misinterpreted (held to a narrow definition) by a lot of folks to mean access to the source code, which which was never the intent to begin with. The Aura engine is certainly arcane, but it'd be a lot easier if people would take the time to learn it than rebuild everything from scratch.
