Thread: Server Bill/Donation Updates

Your average home computer would work fine as a game server for EA. Ideally you'd want an internet connection with reliable upload speeds of 1 MB/second, but even that isn't critical.

Moo, funny pic, but goddamn it's depressing.

There is a grain of truth to that, but it's a huge stretch to say "most" of the comp power goes to MS. You can avoid this in a number of different ways. One obvious way is just don't get online. Another is to be discreet about which sites you visit. Still another is to clean up your comp regularly by getting rid of cookies, temp files and clearing out the cache. Even better...run Linux. But all that is for people who are paranoid and anal.

I just reformat my HDD and do a fresh install of my OS every 4 - 6 months.

Endless ages server uses a couple gigs of ram easily. Isn't very optimized. It also uses a lot more bandwidth than you would guess, even for a low number of players.

The server we had with SoftLayer wasn't anything special--dual core 2.4 GHz processor w/ 2 GB of RAM. That's your basic game package. You can see it here: https://www.softlayer.com/Sales/orderServer/18/521

It wasn't bad at all for $179/ month IMO. But for that much money they shouldn't have been charging all those fees. Oh well, that's the way it goes.

Torn, you don't know wtf you are talking about. Jason did host the server oh his home computer for a few days until Majin Roe kicked in the money to pay for SoftLayer.

Before that you said you would pay for it, but you didn't have any money on your bank or PayPal cards, you were blowing smoke up Jason's ass...so stfu.

That pic would have been better if the photagrapher would have shown the notes being flushed down a toilet instead of sitting in a kitchen sink.

Actually acerbic I couldn't host it off my home pc cuz of windows 7 and iis 7. If I install windows server 2003 on my pc I could host it easily, which I might end up doing.

hmm sounds like a decent idea but where on earth does one find a copy of windows server 2003 these days? YouTube - "Ebay" by Weird Al Yankovic

You can find things pretty easily on google if you know what to look for.

Yea but on college campuses it's difficult to do bittorrent. Hence google direct downloads. Uses just as much bandwidth, but they don't see you connecting to 20+ peers at the same time.

Oh yea, sometimes I forget people rely on work or school networks. Gets me in trouble for posting questionable content =p
