Thread: Virus - What Ace Said

Something 2 indeed look into. The installer of EA did indeed have a virus, here is the details.
"ea-install.sfx.exe";"Trojan horse BackDoor.Hupigon5.AKWV"
Could be perhaps from the multiple extensions however, but its something that should be fixed so that future people do not think it is a hoax and just deleting and forgetting...

Yup, and I wouldn't download any gamefiles from the fan sites. Get them directly from this site or Blegh's FileFront site.

edit: and I'm not referring to 3rd part apps like pA's EA Monster Bytes. I have it installed and use it. I recommend others use it, it's a great tool.

ea-install.sfx.exe is a self-extracting archive file. It contains the most recent launcher.
For now, just to be safe, anyone needing the new launcher may get it directly from here instead of using ea-install.sfx.exe.

I got mine from the original Open Beta thread link...

I already told Jason where I got it from, and I see he has removed the link to the mirror site hosting those gamefiles. He also removed my original post on this subject because it contained unhelpful information and I actually suggested he delete it. I have full faith Jason will correct the problem.

AVG detected a keylogger without me doing a scan and after I quarantined the file and restarted everything locked up. Getting rid of it isn't that big a deal, the concern is that personal information such as email and financial accounts may have been compromised.

Virustotal seems to show both the self extracting archive, and endless.exe from the link in the open beta thread to be clean. It is possible a twitchy virus program may decide it is a virus when opened because of the fact that it pulls a lot of data over http....

I don't have anything constructive to add, other than "Hupigon" totally sounds like it should be an EA Mob name.

I use Avg, however I have tested it out and when editing extension types and adding new extensions types, it will say there is a virus. I'm not saying that it IS a virus, just that some people who download this might think it is and it would give us a bad name right then and there.

welll.... imma uninstall this game and delete all the files, not only cause of the virus ( that i have yet to locate ) but cause game sucks without boomtown and proper quest tracking and UI........

Secondly, this game has been through more storms than a Kansas weather vane. Yet here it is. Those of us who stick around know it and expect it and we keep coming back even though we know nothing will ever change. We are like family gathered together for the Holidays; we don't particularly like everyone, we just know we are all more alike than the other douchebags we all hate more than each other.

its just impossible for me to even remotely convice my freinds to play this game..... '' hey stop playing COD6, borderlands, dragon age, (add vastly superour games here) to play EA with me ?..... ya know games that were actually user freindly?

it did however work out when BT was up cause that place was fairly easy to navigate and dident require maps that you hada print out......

Boomtown (not Rapport) is in game... None of the shops/banks work though. Most of the quests there still do though! Mobs are there as well!

Uhg, this is a little pet peeve of mine: who the hell started this "Rapport" thing? It means nothing. There was only the original Boomtown and the Air Kingdom Boomtown that came with MMOLands.

The only reference to "Rapport BoomTown" was a traveler NPC chick in Four Falls, and she was the same in both versions; Booster and MMOLands. Has anyone bothered to ask themselves why it was called "Rapport" in the first place? You're on the interwebz folks, there are dictionaries to consult.

I'm having a hard time actually deciphering this thread to figure out where this virus comes from. Virus total scans both the self extracting archive and the actual executable with AVG, and every other antivirus known to man, yet finds nothing. Was it ONLY from a certain mirror we're finding a virus? does AVG detect a virus only when you run endless.exe? I can't help but think this is all entirely a false alarm, as it so often is with many antivirus programs who seem to think any program that is not within their 'trusted' list that tries to access the internet is a virus.

Endless.exe downloads quite a few things over HTTP, including a webpage, server information, and more. Often times from multiple servers, depending on its current settings. Could someone please figure out if this is actually a problem, because I am entirely unsure. When you run the exe was your computer thusly infected, or did it continue to only report the endless ages exes. A virus is defined by its ability to spread, if it has not infected anything else, it is probably not a virus.

OFF TOPIC: I do have a problem with open ports for certain games which ****es me off. I can barely connect with anyone, some "fixes" just fail

I use avast! and it's completely up to date. didn't find anything or have any problems. I'll d/l avg on my other comp and see if I can produce the virus warning

im useing avira, spyboy S&D, and malawarebytes.... all threee dident detect anything.....

Try useing Norton corp.. It will NEVER mis identify a virus.

All virus scanners are crap. Quick google search says norton has some false positives sometimes to, but truely I do see that coming more from AVG.

No, I did not get a virus from a mirror, I have only downloaded direct.
Second, there was no malicious problems caused from it.
Third, like I've said, you can change the extension of a file and virus scanners will pick it up as a virus.
All and all, I dont think there is anything at all 2 worry about.

norton is the biggest pile of crap on the market. If you are using it then you are not secure from anything.

Using norton is like going around draging a bunch of heavy fishing nets while hanging out on a sbmarine with a screen door for a hatch.
